Places I have been in:

Asia
Hong Kong
Check out video of Hong Kong through my eyes

I must say that I did not get to know Hong Kong as well as I would have liked to. I could have used another week here, some more money and a few more local friends.

The chinese food in Hong Kong is enormously different from what I have been getting from the chinese carry outs on every corner in inner city DC. Some of it is horrifying but I thoroughly enjoyed most of it. Even the simplest dish had ten times the layers of flavor and complexity of taste than what I get at home. I also could not find any of the stuff that is in my local Chinese carry out. I did not see any beef and broccoli and General Tso and his chicken were nowhere to be found. Also, try as I might, I could not find anyone in Hong Kong who knew what the hell Mumbo Sauce was. (That’s an inside joke for my homies from DC)

I did get pretty pimped out there though and bought my first tailor made suit. It was pretty kick ass! The suit fit me like a glove and whenever I where it I feel like superman.

I wore my suit to the race track and felt like a king. I would have bet on horse number five because his name was sniper. My camera man wanted me to get local advice though and the guy told me that sniper was a long shot and that I should bet on another horse to come in the top three. I took his advice and my horse came in third and I won an extra ten bucks. Sniper, however, came in first and I would have won four or five hundred if I would have followed my guy and bet on him. Either way, I was surprised at the adrenaline rush of watching a horse race and unexpectedly, it was exciting.

I also wore my suit to high tea at the famous peninsula hotel. with all the extremely wealthy people around, I felt completely out of place. And for the price, the tea was just tea. I had much better in a small tea shop in Singapore for a tenth of the price. I know I’ll get a chance to get used to that type of lifestyle one day.

Although it was extremely hot and humid, I enjoyed just getting lost in the Hong Kong streets and discovering the simple things and ordinary life there. I also had a great foot massage here. damn i miss cheap massages.

Singapore
Singapore was a culture shock. Definitely a good place to start before shocking myself further with a more Asian part of Asia. I say that because they stress english education there so finding someone who speaks english is a LOT easier than in other asian countries.

The rules here are pretty strict but no one ever stopped me for jaywalking. The people in Singapore were the coolest. I met sooo many cool people there it was unbelievable. I stayed in Little india and that was a culture shock all on its own. I ate lots and lots of curry there. If you do not stop the guys in the restaurants, they will keep slopping the stuff on your plate all day long. Every morning I went to the massive food market and had Roti Prata and fresh squeezed sugar cane juice. great!

I also tried acupuncture here and it hurt like hell! The guy literally paralyzed me! I was laying on my stomach and he was poking needles in my back and suddenly, I could not move any of my limbs! I was freaking out. Every time he twisted one of those needles in my back, pain would shoot through my entire back! I equated that acupuncture session to banging my head against the wall because it feels so good when you stop. So, after it was over, I felt pretty good. I’d still try it again though. I don’t think this guy knew what he was doing.

Taipei, Taiwan

Now this was the culture shock of culture shocks. The first day I was in Taipei, I walked around with my friend Josh looking for an internet cafe. It must have taken us a full ten minutes before we realized that there actually would not be a simple sign that said, “internet cafe” because everything is written in Chinese characters. That simple thing hit home with the weight of a brick.

I found Taipei to be an amazing city. I tried really hard here to learn as much Mandarin as I could in the week that I was there and it paid off in the smiles, and sometimes laughter, I got from the locals whenever I would speak. I went to an open park and got some old Taiwanese men to teach me how to play chinese chess. That was an awesome experience.

The food here was just amazing. So full of flavors. Whenever I got the chance, I got a local to order for me and it always ended up good. I found these things that I started calling waffle balls at the stand next to my hostel. They were amazing. The only way I can describe them is as little waffle balls...

I got a chance here to be a guest english teacher at the Hess language school and this was an opportunity that I will never forget. The kids were so attentive that I was amazed. I thoroughly enjoyed being teacher tony.

When I first arrived in Taipei, it was during the Dragon Boat festival and the main races had just concluded. It was pouring down raining and we actually got the chance to race in a friendly race in the boat of the team that just won! I actually got to get in a dragon boat in the pouring ran with the champion team and race two other boats. We came in second place but it was damn fun and a damn cool experience.

I also took a side trip to a Haka village not to far away. There I participated in a Haka Opera, met the walt disney of Taiwan and ate more amazing food. They had this place with wonderful rice dumplings. The opera house also had these cubed sweet potatoes cooked in a syrupy sugary sauce. You would pick them up and dump them in a bowl of cold water and the syrupy stuff would harden and then you would pop them in your mouth. Un-be-lievable!

I cannot say enough about the warmth of the people in Taipei. It is definitely one of my top favorite cities I have visited.
